Mountain experience – for young and old alike
Travelling with locals – this tour is popular among Icelandic families

The highlands of Iceland are an exciting place to explore. Here you can see volcanoes, lava fields, black sands, ice-cold rivers, hot springs, natural geothermal baths and glaciers up close. Nobody lives in the highlands- unless you count ghosts, trolls and maybe an outlaw or two. To get to the highlands, you can´t just rent a car and strike out on your own: the roads here aren´t designed for small cars, you have to drive over lava and unbridged rivers.

We’ll enjoy the Icelandic nature, linger in it, draw, sculpt, paint, and make a record of things that capture our fancy. Along with the tour-guide an artist specialized in artistic work with children will offer participants art and nature observation.

We place emphasis on good local food and offer our guests traditional Icelandic dishes. For breakfast organic porridge from Icelandic barley, delicious delicacies on the road and meals from high quality raw materials.

All welcome: single adults, couple; you don’t have to be accompanied by children to enjoy

Day 1: Volcanoes and glaciers – Dwarfed by the mountains
Pick-up at hotel/lodgings in Reykjavík on departure day at 8:30 a.m. We head out of the city and into the Icelandic countryside, then swing off the beaten track and follow a leisurely jeep trail that leads us through the highlands of Iceland. With scenery like this, we absolutely refuse to stay in the car for too long at once! We’ll make plenty of stops along the way. In the afternoon, we arrive at Mt. Strútur in a cosy valley at the feet of Torfajökull glacier, that will be our home for the next two nights – the perfect place for sharing stories about ghosts, trolls and the hidden people who make Iceland their home.

Day 2: Mountain bath (maybe with trolls!)
After waking up bright and early, we take the time to stretch well, eat a good breakfast and make a lunch to take with us before setting out on a wilderness walk. The mountain landscape here could hardly be more amazing: pitch-black sands, soft moss, glaciers and glacial rivers. We stop to relax in a natural hot pool, built long, long ago by shepherds so they could soothe their tired muscles after a long day of chasing after sheep – and maybe running away from trolls and outlaws! Back to our home in the highland, we all join together to prepare for an evening feast and entertainments.

Day 3: Canyon walk
Morning stretches and a delicious, nourishing breakfast. We say goodbye to our mountain home. On our drive back, we’ll be hopping out regularly to take a look at incredible natural wonders such as the magnificent canyon carved by the Markarfljót glacial river. We arrive back in Reykjavík in the late afternoon.
